ABA Therapy

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the leading approach to improving the developmental deficiencies associated with autism. ABA therapy is likely able to improve the quality of life of your child and help them reach their full potential. Endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General, ABA therapy focuses on human behavior and is able to increase desirable behavior and minimize unwanted behaviors.

About ABA Therapy

ABA therapy will address the developmental deficiencies identified during an initial assessment of your child’s functioning across dozens of areas. With children on the autism spectrum, this often includes areas of verbal communication, like the ability to converse with parents and peers, request items, and communicate emotions and needs. Nonverbal communication, like making gestures and understanding social cues, can also be developed. Other important target areas of ABA include social skills, play skills, potty training, self-care skills (brushing teeth, washing hands, etc.), and day-to-day living skills (getting dressed, table manners, etc.). ABA therapy is the gold standard for a clinically-validated and heavily researched approach to helping children with autism.

Natural Environment Training

Koala Academy Pediatric Therapies uses a Natural Environment Training environment in our clinics to give your child the most fun and natural setting in which to work their individualized program one on one with their therapists. Interacting socially with their peers in an open environment that includes circle time, arts and crafts, music therapy, lunch time, sensory and gym activities.

Natural Environment Training was developed by Drs. Sundberg & Partington and based on Skinner's Verbal Behavior (1957.) Teaching in the NET requires the therapist to focus on the child's immediate interests and activities as a guide to their language instruction. It is conducted in a typical daily environment, not in a formal teaching arrangement. This type of training allows for more manding (requesting) opportunities, reduces the need for intricate generalization procedures and promotes more spontaneous verbal behavior. The child may also exhibit fewer negative behaviors because of the focus on motivation and the use of consequences more directly related to that motivation (Hall & Sundberg, 1987; Koegal, Koegal, & Surratt, 1992; Stafford, Sundberg, & Braam, 1988).
